Running man Barry puts best foot forward to raise money

-

A Livingston man is running at least 5k every day in March to raise money for Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion.

Barry Bradford is a research scientist with the Roslin Institute at the University of Edinburgh, and when he’s not looking into a microscope he’s running to raise funds for Ukrainian refugees.

The scientist, who works as part of a team to combat brain degeneration and dementia, is doing well in his month-long challenge, running at least 5k a day and raising a total of £730 with 32 supporters.

Barry, originally from Manchester but now living in Livingston, is relatively new to running, having only just invested in the hobby.

But he was moved to action when he began to witness the horrific scenes unfolding in Ukraine on the news.

Speaking about his fundraising campaign, Barry said: “I saw the invasion begin to unfold in Ukraine over the news and knew how much of an impact it was going to have on Ukrainians.

“Then, when Ukrainians began to flee, it tore me apart to see families with children leaving their homes with everything they own packed into a suitcase and I knew then I had to do whatever I could to help.

“I chose to run every day in March as I know it wouldn’t be totally impossible, but it would definitely be a challenge. It was kind of a spur of the moment thing.

“The most days I’ve run in a row before now has been three or four. Now it’s becoming more routine, but I don’t know if I’ll still be saying that on day 31!”
