Nerves blamed as Devils defeated

-

A fine return to action from Willie Lawson couldn’t prevent the Armadale Devils falling to a 52-38 home defeat to Berwick Bullets to open speedway’s 2022 National Development League season.

Former Edinburgh Monarchs star Lawson tallied 14 points while new club captain Tom Woolley added 11 for the hosts.

However, the support wasn’t there as the other five riders were only able muster up 13 points combined, something team manager Alan Budzynski admitted may have been down to nerves.

He commented:“We kept ourselves in with a chance until near the end.

“Willie Lawson was amazing and Tom Woolley was very good, but there were too many first night nerves.

“I’m sure we can go down to Berwick next week and do a better job.”

The Bullets went in front as early as the second heat and continued to extend their advantage throughout the evening with the Devils unable to secure a single race advantage.

The two sides meet on Saturday in Berwick as part of a double-header that sees the Edinburgh Monarchs also take on the Berwick Bandits.
