Three local community groups are in the running to be awarded cash from Garden centre Dobbies’HelpingYour Community Grow initiative.

Community projects were invited to nominate themselves for support and now a shortlist has been selected by local team members. People in Livingston now have the chance to vote for their favourite project.

Public voting is now open for shortlisted community projects and will remain open until 16 May.

The winning project in Livingston will then receive advice, products and support from their local Dobbies’team. Sustainable products, such as peat-free compost and recycled pots, will be use wherever possible.

In the shortlist are Friends of Inchyra

Park is a community group who has created an orchard garden, providing a place for those who have lost loved ones to plant a tree in their memory. Dobbies’ resources would help the group plant up herb and fruit planters, create a wildflower section as a tribute to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, and obtain equipment to help maintain the orchard.

The Boghall Drop-in Centre (pictured) is looking to support children at the local school by providing an outdoor area that can help the kids develop a positive attitude to gardening, plus develop teamwork skills and encourage sustainable practices in everyday life. The support from Dobbies would allow the centre to improve the garden area for children to enjoy and learn from.

And Uphall Playgroup is a local non-profit community group for children aged 2-5 years. The playgroup is looking for Dobbies’help to create a green space for the children to play outdoors and learn about nature.

Dobbies’CEO, Graeme Jenkins, said: “Now the community voting gets underway and we’re looking forward to seeing which projects receive our support.”

There will be further opportunities for community groups looking to brighten up their local areas. Community groups are invited to contact their local store for details of the community initiatives available on a case-by-case basis.
