Local woodlands part of jubilee celebratio­n

Areas of beautiful West Lothian woodland are to be dedicated to the Queen to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee.

The Prince of Wales, Patron of The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC), has unveiled a nationwide network of 70 Ancient Woodlands and 70 Ancient Trees to be dedicated to Her Majesty.

Three local locations are included across the two networks – two Ancient trees and one Ancient woodland.

Featured in the Ancient trees category are Torphichen Horse Chestnut, located in Torphichen Churchyard and Hopetoun Field Maple, located at Hopetoun House.

In the Ancient woodlands category is Calderwood at Almondell and Calderwood Country Park. Prince

Charles said: “These working woodlands and magnificen­t trees span our nation’s amazing landscape and exist for everyone to enjoy.

“The Ancient woodlands and trees can be found in urban as well as rural environmen­ts, from National Parks to residentia­l areas, representi­ng the unique diversity of all corners of the United Kingdom. Trees and woodlands have a profound significan­ce for us all – their steadfast and reassuring presence a reminder of our long serving Sovereign and her enduring dedication.”

Moira Niven, LordLieute­nant of West Lothian added: “I am really delighted that these wonderful natural treasures in West Lothian have been highlighte­d and acknowledg­ed through the Queen’s Green Canopy for her Platinum Jubilee celebratio­ns.

“It is impressive to see three designatio­ns of ancient trees and woodland in West Lothian. They are a valuable aspect of our landscape and social history and are there to be enjoyed and protected for future generation­s. A most fitting dedication for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.”
