Burnie crowned champs after netting perfect dozen

Delight as they take the title on goal difference

- CALLUM CARSON

Whitburn were crowned East of Scotland Conference X champions in stunning fashion after knocking 12 goals past Fauldhouse United to lift the trophy on goal difference.

The Burnie went into the season’s final day trailing Syngenta by a single goal.

And with the league leaders hosting basement boys Pumpherston, it was always likely a convincing victory would be needed.

And so it proved as The Dyes bagged seven but they were pipped to the post by Whitburn’s perfect dozen at Park View, as they defeated the hosts 12-0.

Despite the scoreline, United keeper Jacob Weatherby actually had a decent game, saving two penalties and producing several decent saves to keep the scoreline down.

But the Hoose defence were simply no match for a rampant Whitburn side who clearly were on all-out attack mode from the first whistle.

Aiden Martin opened the scoring after getting on the end of a Reece Duncan cross after 15 minutes, with the floodgates

then well and truly opening as the goals deluge started.

Darren Liddell made it two on 22 minutes after reacting the quickest to Weatherby saving Duncan’s penalty, before a wonderful run and strike from Andy Thomson made it 3-0 just before the half-hour mark.

Martin nabbed his second before missing a penalty after

Liddell had been brought down by Alistair Morgan – with the Hoose skipper seeing red for his challenge.

He grabbed his hat-trick just two minutes later before Duncan got on the scoresheet with a fine finish to make it 6-0 at the break.

At that point, Syngenta were up by three so the Burnie knew that there would have to be no

let-off in the scoring after the interval. Much like the first half, Fauldhouse stood firm for 15 minutes before eventually capitulating.

Substitute Louis Maguire grabbed Whitburn’s seventh on 60 minutes, which sparked a spell of five goals in 11 minutes to ensure that the claret and amber would be crowned champions.

Michael McGarahan got in on the act, firing home after being cleverly teed up by Duncan’s free-kick, with Liddell and Duncan both scoring their second to make it double figures.

Grant Hamilton and then Dylan Weldon completed the rout and ensured that the Burnie boys were partying for a second successive weekend.
