Win puts Livi on verge of sealing the title

-

Livingston Women could win the SWFL Championship title on Sunday thanks to a commanding 3-0 victory away at Greenock Morton.

A Shannon Mulligan brace that arrived just before and after the interval was added to by Jess Murphy as the Lionesses ensured they head into this weekend’s home clash with Hutchison Vale sitting eight points clear with just four games remaining.

That means a Livi win, coupled with Renfrew dropping points at home to Ayr United, will clinch the title.

After spurning some good chances, Livi got themselves in front on the stroke of half-time as Mulligan latched onto Erin Burns’free-kick and dinked the ball beyond the keeper in the final minute of the first-half.

Just three minutes after the restart she was at it again, this time pouncing on a Natasha Frew ball over the top to lob the keeper - this time from the edge of the box.

Murphy put the game to bed on 74 minutes as he nodded home at the back post for Livi’s third.

A delighted coach Connor McCloskey said:“It was a really good win. I thought the first-half was a bit scrappy at times and we battled more than anything but any time we played shorter football we dominated and created chances.

“We had a good talk at half-time and changed the system a wee bit which worked for us and in the second-half we dominated the game. It was a thoroughly deserved three points.

“We were getting a wee bit frustrated by the game breaking up all the time and it was just a case of keep doing the right things.”

He added:“Shannon was superb. We played her higher which really worked for us.”

Livi head into Sunday’s clash as heavy favourites against the relegation threatened Vale and will be hoping for a repeat of their recent 3-0 win away from home as they look to edge closer to promotion.

McCloskey commented:“We dominated them away from home in the last game on a poor grass surface. We’re hoping to take the game to them, go and win the football match and get three points on the board.”
