Hartson golf day a huge hit for charity

- CALLUM CARSON

The John Hartson Golf Day, held at Harburn Golf Club, has raised a record £20,000 – an impressive £5,000 more than last year.

Organised by Walker Groups’ contract manager Jim Murphy, wife Angela and daughter Amy Jane – with the support of volunteers at Seafield Sportsman Charity – the event fundraises for The John Hartson Foundation.

With golf, an auction, raffle prizes plus the hole in one competition for a £30,000 car, each year the event is a sell-out and raises a great sum for a worthy cause.

Over the last four years, Jim has raised over £80,000 for the charity set up by former Celtic, Luton, Arsenal, West Ham and Wales footballer Hartson, inspired by his own battle against testicular cancer.

The charity is committed to raising awareness of early symptoms, support those who are affected by the disease and their families with counselling and assist in the provision of medical facilities.

Jim said: “I’m delighted we’ve raised such a fantastic sum for The John Hartson Foundation.

“The charity is on hand to support people affected by the disease and campaigns to raise awareness of testicular cancer as well as other types of cancer .

“Their work makes a huge difference to people who need it most.

“I’m so grateful for all the people who came out on the day, donated to the cause, bid on items at the auction, and of course to the sponsors who have helped make the day such a success.” He added: “I’m especially thankful to the Springfield Group, which includes Walker and Dawn Homes, for their continuous support of the event for the last four years.

“Their sponsorship, with the entry of multiple teams and the donation of prizes is a huge help.”

Hartson, who enjoyed a brief coaching spell with Livingston, said: “The golf day was, as always, a great day with great company for a great cause.

“The amount raised is a fantastic contribution and will allow the charity to continue to support people affected by cancer.”
