Horsham suffer shock defeat at lowly Woking
four Woking defenders. In the midst of some shambolic organisation Woking struck again, a virtual carbon copy of their first.
Following the half-time breather, Horsham slowed the pace right down, started playing sensible controlled hockey, and let the ball do the work. It paid results when Peter Neave followed up at a half-cleared short corner and got the visitors on the scoreboard.
More of the same saw Jean Marshall, who has been one of the big surprises in a Horsham shirt this year, with a knack of being in the right place at the right time, pop up and score Horsham’s second from six yards.
This seemingly set the game up for a storming Horsham finish. However, rather than capitalising on their momentum they reverted to giving the ball away. Somewhat predictably Woking created yet another overload and closed out the game.
Manager Al Campbell said: “All in all it was a scrappy game all round, made scrappier by a string of indecipherable umpiring decisions that frustrated both sides. But Horsham let their standards slip from previous weeks and paid the price.
“In all honesty we didn’t deserve to win. Woking wanted it more, won even the 60:40 balls and played as a team – we looked like a group of disconnected individuals.”
Horsham now host Blackheath & Elthamians on Saturday.
