Burton makes the most of extra shots

-

Every golfer has times in a round when they would like to replay a shot without penalty and Mannings Heath’s ladies has three opportunities to do so in their latest 14-hole fun competition.

Making the most of her three mulligans in the silver division was 13-handicap Mina Burton.

She only used one of them on the front nine and helped by a birdie on the short fifth reached the turn with 17 points, an excellent effort on a course offering minimal run.

Tina Norris was out in the same score but had used all her second chances after the 10th while Burton still had two in hand.

She used both of them on the penultimate hole to earn a three point par and that proved decisive as she finished with 29 points to Norris’s 28. Rita Searles took third place on countback from Rosemary Martin after both carded 26.

There was a similarly tight finish in the bronze division where Jakki Tidey, playing off 28, came home with 29 to beat Jenny Rees by one and Margaret Edwards by three.

On a more sombre note the club were sad to learn of the death on Saturday of one of their long standing current members, Peter Walsh.

Despite having had a lung removed nearly 20 years ago and contending with other serious health issues, Peter was still carrying his clubs round the Waterfall until just before Christmas. His cheerful, upbeat presence on the course and in the clubhouse will be greatly missed.
