Horsham Hoofers are winter cup champions

-

Horsham Hoofers A team won the Sussex walking football over-50 Winter Cup when keeper Bob Charles saved a penalty in the shootout against Young Bucks.

Successful penalties from Simon Clark and Andy Overington had already put the Hoofers 2-0 up.

Young Bucks had to score to stay in the shoot-out, but the ‘keeper’s save saw Hoofers win the cup for the first time.

Horsham Hoofers entered both an A team and a B team in the competition held in Worthing on Monday, March 3.

In the preliminary round, Hoofers A won their first match against pretournament favourites Seniors Red with a goal from Tony McMahon.

Two goalless draws meant a victory was needed in final group match. This was secured after a 4-0 victory against Brighton Dolphins.

Meanwhile, Hoofers B drew four and won one of their five group matches.

A goal from Danny Holloway in the match they won put them into a penalty shoot-out with Arun Arena to determine which team would progress to the semis.

Despite the heroics of goalkeeper Maggie Smith, the B team narrowly failed to progress.
