Police helicopter and dogs called in to search area
Two men were arrested after a fatal crash sparked a mass police search in the Horsham district.
A police helicopter and several dog units scoured the Billingshurst area on Friday as officers hunted for two men who police said ran from the scene of a collision along the A29.
A Ford Fiesta left the road and crashed into a set of concrete bollards close to the entrance of a pub in Adverane.
A 51-year-old woman, who had been travelling in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police spent several hours searching the area for two men who had also been travelling in the car.
Officers confirmed a 57-year-old man from Pulborough and a 54-yearold man from Coldwaltham, were arrested on suspicion of driving offences. They have been bailed until June 21.
The crash took place at about 10.40am northbound on the A29 near the Blacksmith’s Arms pub
close to the junction with Adversane Lane.
Emergency services immediately closed the road between the junctions of Adversane Lane and Henris Lake.
Villagers in Billingshurst were put on alert after the National Police Air Service helicopter and several dog units were called to the scene.
An eyewitness told the County Times the helicopter was circling over the Weald School whilst several other police cars were seen patrolling the village.
The road was closed for more than eight hours as officers carried out investigations into the crash. It was reopened shortly before 7pm.
