You can be part of next 80 years of volunteering

- Contributed by Citizens Advice Horsham

Citizens Advice Horsham wants people to be part of the next 80 years of its history by volunteering with them.

The Citizens Advice service started almost 80 years ago on the eve of the Second World War and is supported by 22,000 volunteers across England and Wales. Citizens Advice Horsham is one of 16 locations operated by Citizens Advice in West Sussex (North, South, East).

As part of Volunteers’ Week, which runs from June 1 to 7, Citizens Advice Horsham wants to extend sincere thanks to all of their volunteer team for their commitment and incredible contribution, and looks forward to welcoming new volunteers in the future to help take the charity into its next 80 years.

Currently there are 57 volunteers at Citizens Advice Horsham who give their time each week to supporting local people, in roles including adviser and reception, to volunteers helping people to complete application forms for benefits, and much more. Last year the volunteers in Horsham helped nearly 5,000 people with problems such as benefit issues (including Universal Credit), debt, housing, and employment.

Volunteers at Citizens Advice help in roles such as giving people information and advice, fundraising activities, admin, research and campaigning work, all helping the service meet its aims: to provide advice to people for the problems they face and improve policies and practices that affect people’s lives.

Wendy, a volunteer at one of our Citizens Advice centres, said: “I like the team that I work with here, talking to the clients is lovely and the satisfaction from helping people is the reason why we all volunteer here. It is rewarding, fun and varied – you never know what you’re going to see. We have fantastic support that allows us to deal with the wide variety of issues we see. I would definitely recommend volunteering for Citizens Advice.”

Volunteers at Citizens Advice are from a very diverse range of backgrounds and ages, enabling the organisation to benefit from their different skills and experiences. Volunteering has many benefits, including increasing confidence and learning new skills, as well as making a positive difference to people’s lives.
