Cable is able to bounce back and lift a Billingshurst title

-

At the Billingshurst Bar Billiards League finals night last Wednesday, Dick Cable finally made it his night.

Having suffered a disappointing evening in the Horsham finals - where he finished as runner-up in four competitions the previous week - he hit back to beat John Slee in a close and exciting men’s singles final.

It was an uncustomary double runner-up evening for Slee, as earlier he and Jim Balchin had missed out in the pairs, losing 2-1 to Trevor Wheeler and Colin Barrow, with Wheeler hitting top form in the decider.

James and Zoe Childs won the mixed doubles, beating Dave and Kelly Slater to retain the title won last year.

The Team Cup and Plate finals had contrasting fortunes, with Peter Barnett, Dave Sands and John Thayre rattling off the first three frames for White Hart to beat Southwater SC in the main event - a fine 8k scored by Tony Franks in the fourth leg being all to no avail.

The Plate went to 2-2 and a nervy decider between Stout House A’s Barry Lawson and Roffey’s Steve Merriott. It was the latter player that achieved a league and team Plate double for his team.

Ricky Dewdney took his usual clutch of silverware and - with his father Dick was formally presented with the Sussex Men’s Doubles Runners-up Cup they won back in January.
