The National Theatre’s production of Treasure Island will be the next show to be broadcast on YouTube as part of National Theatre at Home. Robert Louis Stevenson’s story of murder, money and mutiny will be brought to life in Bryony Lavery’s stage adaptation. It will be streamed as part of National Theatre at Home, the National’s new initiative to screen a selection of muchloved National Theatre Live productions on YouTube for free during the coronavirus lockdown. Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic will be shown on the National Theatre’s YouTube channel on Thursday, April 16, at 7pm. Spokeswoman Elaine Jones said: “It’s a dark, stormy night. The stars are out. Jim, the inn-keeper’s granddaughter, opens the door to a terrifying stranger. At the old sailor’s feet sits a huge sea-chest, full of secrets. Jim invites him in – and her dangerous voyage begins. “During this unprecedented time which has seen the closure of theatres, cinemas and schools, National Theatre At Home is providing access to content online to serve audiences in their homes. “Audiences around the world can stream NT Live productions for free via YouTube every Thursday at 7pm and it will then be available on demand for seven days. “Following Treasure Island is Twelfth Night on April 23 featuring Tamsin Greig as Malvolia in Shakespeare’s classic comedy, with further titles to be announced. “Alongside the streamed productions, National Theatre At Home will also feature accompanying interactive content such as Q&As with cast and creative teams and post-stream talks, with further details of this programme to be announced.” National Theatre Live turned ten on June 25 last year – the date of the first ever NT Live broadcast, which was Phedre starring Academy Award winner Helen Mirren. Over ten years more than 80 theatre productions have been shown in 3,500 venues worldwide, reaching an overall audience of more than 10 million people. NT Live currently screens in 2,500 venues across 65 countries.

Free full-length productions are also available weekly from the Royal Opera House. Spokeswoman Hannah Last said: “We are proud to announce the next in the series of free Royal Opera House (ROH) broadcasts. “Get under the skin of one of the world’s most famous cultural institutions as we bring you curated online broadcasts, musical masterclasses and cultural insights in this period of closure. “We are thrilled to announce two new fulllength Royal Opera House productions available on Facebook and YouTube.” Gloriana, The Royal Opera, 2013 will be streamed on April 24 at 7pm. The Winter’s Tale, The Royal Ballet, 2014 will be streamed on May 1 at 7pm. “In this uncertain time, and as productions and events are postponed at the Royal Opera House and around the world, we are presenting new content weekly for audiences to access anywhere, anytime across the globe, bringing both ballet and opera to every home and every device. “Our dancers, artists, orchestra players and chorus have been busy creating content for the ROH social media channels to bring our artforms to life and go behind the scenes of ballet and opera.”
