Call for action after seven crashes

A Plummers Plain man says he has given up repairing his fence after the seventh crash into his front garden.

Retiree Robert Scott is calling on West Sussex County Council to install a crash barrier outside his house after the latest collision, which happened earlier this month.

The Handcross Road resident said: “It’s become such a regular occurrence we have given up repairing the fence.

“We had a row of shrubs and every now and again we have to replace them.

“[Vehicles] come off the road and take out our hedge.”

Robert fears a car could collide with a family member as they wait to pull out the drive. He is urging highways chiefs to cut the speed limit from 60mph to 50 and install a protective barrier.

Robert said since moving in 2006 at least seven vehicles have crashed into his garden.

A West Sussex County Council spokesman said: “We are concerned to hear about any accident and take road safety very seriously.

“Any anti-social driving should be reported directly to www.operationcrackdown. org or Sussex Police.

“Residents can apply for speed limit reductions but any application would have to be assessed against county council policy, which has been derived from Department for Transport guidance and is supported by the Police: this is to ensure a consistent approach at a county and national level.”
