We’re as pleased as punch to return

-

Horsham Boxing club opened up some outdoor junior and youth sessions – and coaches were pleased to see old faces along with a couple of new ones too.

The sessions attracted tenplus on both days, which was an encouraging start.

England Boxing have now slightly relaxed some rules which means pad work is now allowed following certain measures. This is a good sign boxing may return by the start of the season in September.

As of next Monday (April 12), the seniors are able to resume full training and the club look forward to seeing as many members back as they had before the lockdown.

Having recently reapplied for planning permission to slightly extend their limited gym space, the club need as many back as possible to help fund the project.

Female club captain Libby Baker said: “Before the last lockdown we were catering for a lot of people.

“The junior session was seeing great numbers, the senior session was thriving and the boxercise classes also saw good numbers.

“It was great because it was a real social hub and showed boxing is really on the rise.

“We have so many good boxers here and they’re all waiting to box for their club and town.”

Coach John Essex said: “We have the Drill Hall booked for October all being well. Hopefully next year will see Horsham have at least three shows and a slightly larger training space to accommodate all the boys and girls in the gym.”

For the next couple of weeks, juniors will Mondays and Wednesdays, 5pm to 6pm; seniors, 6pm to 7.30pm.
