Vegan market brings town’s piazza to life

- Jasmin Martin

Piries Place came alive at the weekend when a monthly vegan market offering an array of plant-based and cruelty-free goodies launched in Horsham.

The piazza was abuzz with visitors on Saturday, April 24, as both vegans and non-vegans alike turned up to see what many of the stalls had to offer.

Organiser Helen Crabb, who also launched the town’s first vegan fairs in 2019 and 2020, said: “We were very pleased with our first Piries Place Vegan Market on Saturday – I think we can definitely call it a success.

“The traders all reported they’d had a great day, with Neil at FNK Pies selling all of his 200 pies by lunchtime! The queue at George’s Greek Vegan Deli proved that his range of Greek specialities were very popular, including his vegetable pastries, cheese straws, pizza slices, olives and lots more.

“And Joyful Kitchen impressed us with her range of traditional cakes, which were every bit as delicious as they looked. Brownie specialist, The Vegan Bakes, had very little left at the end of the day (for which our waistlines are all going to suffer), and Sophie’s Delight thrilled the public with her range of artisan vegan cheese – it was her first visit to Horsham and we very much hope she’ll be back.”

Other stalls included Sage & Ivory and The Green Boutique – both offering re-useable and eco based products, skincare from Tropic and Forever Living, fruit and herbal teas from Raduga, plus Twang soaps, La Cena’s grater plates, Katie’s Nuttery nut butters, raw cacao products from Deliciously Honest, sea buckthorn from Zoee, and Happy Dog Happy Planet for those four-legged friends.

Piries Place Vegan Market will be in the piazza on the last Saturday of every month from 9am-4pm, with the next taking place on May 29.

All profits from the market go to to Holbrook Animal Rescue and Animals Asia.

Helen said: “We had lots of vegans visit the market throughout the day, but equally lots of our visitors weren’t vegan but were just happy to have something a little different going on in the town.

“Many of the traders also commented on what a nice piazza it was and how well the market was suited to it.”
