Merriment on May Day in Horsham back in 2011
May Day celebrations in the Horsham district in 2011 saw people don fancy dress and take to the streets to party in Plaistow and Rusper. These images, taken by Derek Martin, give a snapshot of the fun. Some 1,100 people enjoyed May Day in Rusper and helped raise around £2,000 for local charities.
The fun started with the Desire to Dance children’s troupe, followed by Punch and Judy and a magician.
There was the first children’s fun cross country race, followed by the regular adult event, entered by 60 professional runners and won by local man Andrew Turner.
Maypole dancing was performed by a dozen girls and one boy, and there was a raffle, tug of war, pets corner, traction engines, live music, a coconut shy and an inflatable galleon.
At Plaistow’s Maypole Fair, held in aid Plaistow Pre-School, youngsters enjoyed the sunshine on the village green. The event featured a hog roast, cakes, games, cream teas, beer and Pimm’s, a giant slide, dog show, children’s entertainment and stalls.
Fancy dress winners were Daniel Simpson in first place, Austin Johnson second and Matilda Simpson third.
