Winning start to the new season for Horsham racer

-

Horsham racing driver John Mickel, five-time former champion of the Legends Cars National Championship with MRF Tyres, made a winning start to the 2021 season at Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire over the weekend, April 24-25.

Ending the championship curtain-raiser second in the title standings, Mickel’sbidforanunprecedented super-sixth Legends Cars title for his own Mickel Motorsport squad is underway impressively.

Finishing second and sixth in the first two races on Saturday, Mickel was then fifth in race three to chalk-up a very healthy haul of points.

On Sunday, he took fifth in race one before winning race two and then adding sixth in the event finale. The latter was red flagged a couple of laps early, preventing another podium challenge.

Team-mate Mike Schlup took a best result of fourth place in the opening contest on Saturday, while Paul Simmons in the third Mickel Motorsport car claimed a highest placed finish of fourth too - his coming in race six.

Mickel said: “It’s gone really well this weekend, although it was a shame the last race was stopped with a red flag.

“There didn’t seem to be a lot between us and the others on pace, we’re somewhere about where we should be and pretty happy overall. It’s been good, onto the next one at Brands.”

Next on the Legends Cars National Championship with MRF Tyres calendar is the first of three 2021 visits to Brands Hatch Indy Circuit in Kent over the weekend June 5-6.
