The family of a 16-year-old girl who tragically died on the railway near Horsham have paid tribute to her.

Police were called to a foot crossing at 9.39am on Saturday May 1 following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

Paramedics also rushed to the line but Marcella Walton, 16, and from Horsham, was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a statement released last Thursday, Marcella’s family said: “Many thanks to those who have offered us their help, support and best wishes following the untimely death of our lovely girl, Marcie.

“May you rest in peace our darling. You were such a kind and gentle soul.”

Meanwhile, detectives from British Transport Police are appealing for witnesses but say that the incident is not being treated as suspicious. Officers are preparing a file for the coroner.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Langley said: “This is an incredibly tragic loss, and first and foremost our thoughts are with Marcella’s family who are being supported by specially trained officers.

“While we are not treating this incident as suspicious, we are continuing to make enquiries so we can establish the full circumstances of the incident.

“In particular, we know a male stopped to speak to train crew in the immediate aftermath and I would encourage him to come forward and assist our investigation.

“Likewise, any witnesses who were in the area at the time or anyone with information can contact us by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 157 of 01/05/21.”
