Horsham bowlers battle the elements on return to green

-

Horsham Bowling Club played host to Sussex Masonic – the first competitive match for both clubs since the summer of 2019.

With the weather trying to put a dampener on the proceedings, play continued through rain, hail, cold winds and even the odd snowflake.

Despite trying conditions, the match was played in a very good spirit with Horsham taking the honours 8042. Top rink of the afternoon was skip Paul Davies, supported by Malcolm Curtis and Derek Thompson, with a score of 27-12. This was Derek’s first match in club colours.

Special thanks go to greenkeeper Stuart King and his team for their hard work preparing the green during a difficult spring for what members hope will be a busy season.

Horsham travelled to Popes Mead for four triple games played on their artificial green. For Horsham this proved difficult to play on, being very unfamiliar, resulting in a hard game with a loss of 32-77.

On a warmer day, Horsham welcomed visitors from Southwater, reduced to a match of three mixed rinks. At halfway, Horsham had a lead of 29-23.

As is often the case, it all changed in the second half, with Southwater seeming to enjoy the green, finally running

out winners by 56-49.

It was a pleasant afternoon, albeit in restricted Covid conditions.
