Pulborough Bowls get the hop on Worthing

With Pulborough Bowls Club’s next two fixtures away against Cranleigh on Thursday, May 13 and the following week at Petworth in the Brookes Motors League, any practice is good practice.

Usually the first game of the season against the Worthing Grasshoppers would be away at Worthing Pavillion, with a hot supper as an added incentive, but with Covid still ever present, the venues were swapped to allow four triples to play when Pulborough see them again in July.

Of the four triples that played, three went Pulborough’s way, with skip Jim Davis, Melvin Green and Alfie Knight scoring a five on the eighth end to take the lead and seven of the next ten ends, finally finishing on an impressive 25 shots to nine.

Paul Leatherbarrow, with George Lewis as lead and Hugh Hubbard as two, only allowed their opponents six ends of single shot wins, ending their torture at 23 shots to six.

But top rink of the day went to the stacked rink of Ray Hall, Steve Adsett and John Brown, who were relentless in their attack, pinning the Grasshopper triple on just five shots to their 28.

The final score was 89-34 to Pulborough Bowls Club.

Sunday saw Pulborough travel to their friends at Henfield BC for a 2pm start.

Four triples took to the vastly improved green, for a competitive game of 18 ends with a break at nine ends.

Malcolm Gray and team had a nine shot lead by end 11, only to struggle in the second half to finish just two shots in the positive.

Steve Adsett, with Jane Gray as lead and Mick Ayling as two, had a literal game of two halves, only winning two of the first nine ends before tea and the following nine ends after tea.

Pulborough won by 20 shots to 11, after a quality

game on a fantastic green.

Top rink went to skip John Brown, with Melvin Green as lead and Steve Meadowcroft as two, after scoring fives on the fourth and tenth ends and taking 14 of the 18 ends to finish 29-6.

The final score was 83-54 to Pulborough, which doesn’t reflect the quality shots put up by the Henfield players or the warmth of the welcome extended to Pulborough.

Henfield will try to reverse the result when they play at Pulborough in a fortnight.
