Light aircraft crashes after engine failure
Two people suffered minor injuries in a plane crash on the Downs near Steyning due to engine failure on Friday 11 February.
Emergency services, including two fire engines, a heavy rescue tender and an off-road vehicle, were called to a plane crash on Friday.
A spokeswoman from Brighton City Airport Air Traffic Control said the light aircraft declared a mayday due to engine failure and crash landed in a field.
She added: “The Air Ambulance was in the area and was redirected to the site. The pilot thankfully walked away from the aircraft.”
A spokesperson for the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said: “An investigation has been launched into an accident which occurred near Steyning, West Sussex on Friday.
“A team of inspectors and support staff were deployed to the accident site to begin gathering evidence on Friday. The team carried out all of the on-site aspects of the investigation on Saturday and, with the assistance of specialist recovery organisations, the wreckage was removed from site on February 13.
“The wreckage will now undergo detailed investigation at the AAIB’s facilities.”
A spokesperson from Sussex Police said: “As of Friday night (February 11), neither injured person was assessed as being in a life threatening condition. We have received no update since.”
