Steyning Jazz Club welcomes Goodman tribute

- Phil Hewitt Group Arts Editor ct.news@jpimedia.co.uk

Clarinettist Pete Long brings his inspirational tribute to the Benny Goodman Quartet to Steyning Jazz Club on Friday, March 4.

Club spokesman Colin Jilks said: “He offers an incredibly successful recreation of the famous Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall concert of 1938, where Benny Goodman and his quartet featured pianist, Teddy Wilson, vibraphone virtuoso, Lionel Hampton, drummer, Gene Krupa, and Benny Goodman, clarinet.

“Pete Long’s career has included time with the Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra as well as directing the Ronnie Scott’s Big Band. He has thrilled audiences with his masterly recreation of this famous Goodman Quartet, conjuring up the rhythmic excitement and energy of one of jazz history’s most revered ensembles. The quartet at Steyning has Pete Long, clarinet; Anthony Kerr, vibraphone; Colin Good, piano; and Richard Pite, drums. Anthony Kerr has, for many years, played vibes for Georgie Fame and the BBC Big Band, and worked with many of the top jazz musicians in the UK.

“Colin Good is among the uniquely few pianists who can play in the style of the great Teddy Wilson. It’s a piano technique that incorporates stride and swing in such a way that the double bass line, usually the mainstay of the jazz rhythm section, is not missed.

“Drummer Richard Pite runs the Jazz Repertory Company. Coming together, this quartet will indubitably bring us a dazzling evening of driving musicality and swing.

“We are pleased to advise there is now a full bar service provided by Riverside Brewery, serving a wide range of drinks.”

Doors open at 7.15pm, concert begins at 8pm. Steyning Jazz Club meets at The Steyning Centre, Fletcher’s Croft, Steyning BN44 3XZ.
