Try using essential oils instead of chemicals

- By Helen Mercercox

Whether, for you, cleaning is a houseproud purifying ritual done in a leotard or a dreary chore done in a grump, we all need to do it, like it or not! We can make it more of a pleasure by a conscious shift our attitude, (‘I’m lucky to have a safe home’), and we can also help to achieve this by choosing cleaning products carefully. Avoiding bleaches and harsh toxic chemicals which can damage our lungs, our skin and our already stressed water-system is a huge help.

We can come back to our senses and to nature.

While we may be used to people using essential oils for health and wellness, you may not realise that essential oils can also be extremely useful for cleaning. Extracted from plants with natural cleansing properties, essential oils can provide a simple yet powerful way to keep things clean and beautifully scented too.

The oils are carefully blended to preserve their potent properties, so when you use essential oils in the home, you are relying on the natural chemical components found in various oils to provide purifying power, rather than relying on poisons.

Because they are so potent, only a few drops of an essential oil may be all you need, whereas other products may require a large amount to get the job done, with the effect of using more plastic bottles which end up in the ocean or at best in the recycling. But simply opening a bottle of any essential oil is all it takes to immediately feel the concentrated potency of these natural liquids.

I brought Camomile Lawn to the Sussex Green Hub last weekend, demonstrating the use of oils for cleansing and their use in diffusers to perfume and hydrate the stale dry air in our centrally-heated winter homes. I even make my own recipe of ‘yoga mat cleanser’. Our yoga mats pick up all sorts of grime and sweat over time, so it’s important to keep it clean. My special potion is naturally antibacterial, anti-infectious, anti-fungal, insect repellent, relaxing – and smells blooming gorgeous! At the Sussex Green Hub on the last Saturday of each month, you too can help the environment and your health by bringing your own empty home and body product bottles which we can refill. Find the products currently on offer at https://www.sussexgreenliving. co.uk/recycling-zone/refill_service

Next month will be themed Spring into Spring so as well as the usual free food from the Horsham Community Fridge, the Repair Café and Carbon Watchers we will be offering a recycling activity using plastic milk bottles to make Mother’s Day planters. Come along and share a cuppa and cake. You will be welcome.
