Victory caps fine season for Horsham

-

Horsham Hotshots, the short mat team for Horsham Bowling Club, travelled to Thakeham for their final league match of the season and came away as victors on an entertaining afternoon.

A very good win for the away team across two mats gave Horsham all six points, while their friendly team drew their match.

Top rink went to short mat captain Mike Wilson, Martin Gardner and lead Wendy Smith who won their league match comfortably.

The scores were level after three ends but Horsham then surged ahead to gain an emphatic 33-10 win on mat one.

On mat two, it was a much tighter affair with skip Jo Newman, Paul Davies and lead Roger Newman gaining three shots on the final end to eventually win 18-17.

On the friendly mat, skip Irene Gettins playing with Yuki Davies and Peter Philpot were ahead all match and had a narrow two-shot lead as they went into the final end.

However Thakeham were to battle back to get a well earned 12-12 draw.

Horsham finish the league season as runners-up in North East League Division 1.

It was a very good season and they were so close to winning the league title, but a creditable second place is to be applauded, after only some six years of playing short mat at Horsham.

There are three more friendly fixtures to play for Horsham before their short mat season draws to a close at the end of March.

Meanwhile, two of their best players, Robbie Calder and Malcolm Curtis, travelled to represent Horsham BC in the Over 55s Pairs nationals in Solihull.

They lost to two Hampshire players, then pushed a pair from Devonall the way.

The Horsham pair’s experience will spur them on to reach the finals again.
