Bowlers pleased to get back on green
Under blue skies, 20 bowlers took to Pulborough BC’s green for the 2022 opening drive.
After a lively introduction to the centenary season from President Malcolm Gray and Captain John Brown, the first bowl was rolled down the green to signal start of play.
Four teams of triples and two of rinks played a full length match on a green that played fast and true, an impressive achievement for greenkeeper Malcolm Gray, who spent hours in the winter nurturing it.
The club welcomed back Matt Ives as skip of one team of four, supported by Ray Knight as lead, Jenny Patterson and Alfie Knight. Their opponents put up a good fight with skip Steve Adsett showing newest member Christian Bushell the ropes as lead, with John Walsh and Terry Chriss supporting.
A slow start for Paul Leatherbarrow, Elaine Lewis and Paul Smith allowed Malcolm Gray’s team of George Lewis and Jane Gray to win 18-13.
Ray Hall’s team of Sylvia Smith and Mick Ayling lost to Trevor Bushell’s triple of Steve and Linda Meadowcroft.
It’s fantastic to start 2022 with a good turnout.
Additional matches are planned for centenary year, including four open days – the firet this Sunday from 2pm, everyone is welcome.
BILLINGSHURST
Billingshurst BC’s season starts on Saturday with an open day from 2pm.
It’s a chance for people to come and try the game of lawn bowls – no experience is necessary, but those who have played before and moved into the Billingshurst area are also welcome.
This is the club’s 90th anniversary and a special match against the first five clubs they played against in 1932 is planned later in the year.
A fun day is planned for Saturday, June 18. Email billingshurstbowlsclub@ gmail.com www. billingshurstbowlingclub.co.uk
