Mel’s 10k makes a welcome return

The 18th Mel’s Milers 10k race took place after two years of being ruled out by Covid restrictio­ns.

The race starts and finishes in the grounds of the Christ’s Hospital School, taking in the Downslink trail, the new Southwater Sports Club grounds and the Southwater Country park.

Mel’s Milers were delighted a full quota 347 runners showed up on a sunny morning. Conditions were perfect.

Bradley Burke, of Horsham Blue Star Harriers, took first in an impressive 34:07. Lingfield RC’s Dan Oppe took second with a time of 36:47, followed by Kev Howarth from Petts Wood Runners at 36:58.

First woman home was Elspeth Turner from Horsham Blue Star Harriers at 39:36. Léa Quentin from Horsham Joggers followed at 42:06 and third was Paula Blackledge of Brighton and Hove AC in 42:22.

The event is organised by Mel’s Milers with the help of family and friends and Christ Hospital Enterprise­s Limited staff.

Profits from this year’s race will go to Over the Wall, a charity which supports children, teenagers and families who have a child with a serious health challenge.

The U118 race was won by Alex Smith of Horsham Blue Star Harriers in 39:49, while Rebekah Walden won the female U18 contest in 1:04:18.

Simon Perkins of Horsham Joggers won the male 40+ category in 37:00 and Michele Nixon of Crawley Saints and Sinners won the female 40+ prize at 44:29.

Jo Hesketh, Paul Blackmore, Stephen Baker, Jenny Hughes, Marion Hemsworth and Tony Lintern were older age group winners.
