Steyning Jazz Club to welcome Martin Bennett

- Music Phil Hewitt Group Arts Editor ct.news@jpimedia.co.uk

Steyning Jazz Club welcome Martin Bennett’s Old Green River Band on Friday, May 6.

Spokesman Colin Jilks said: “Much travelled and returning from tours to Australia and California, Martin Bennett’s Old Green River Band bring their vast experience to Steyning Jazz Club.

“For many years, Martin was primarily a trombonist, although he now leads his band from the keyboard, keeping his renowned vocals as part of the programme. The Old Green River Band is an incredibly inspiring band, creating its own readily identifiable sound, its hard swinging rhythm section emboldened by the superb musicianship of the front line musicians.

“The band’s line-up will be: Martin Bennett, piano/vocals; John Finch, trombone; Stan Williams, trumpet; Sarah Spencer, reeds; Howard Worthington, bass; and Bill Buck, drums. This is principally a hot Dixieland/Swing band with its mix of old heads and young blood, but with the shared intention of playing top class music with integrity and passion. They are one of the best bands on the UK jazz scene, offering distinctive solos from fine musicians of just the right length – not too long to tire, not too brief to frustrate, but all exhibiting an innate musicality and authority.”

Colin added: “Our audiences are growing, enjoying the club’s informal friendly ambience, although, unlike many jazz clubs, it is a listening club. Seating is relaxed café style, with a bar provided by the local Riverside Brewery. Booking is not required as visitors and members pay on the door; why not become a member for £15 allowing half price admission for the year? Our printed programme booklets detailing bands until December will be available at this concert,”

Doors 7.15pm, concert 8pm. The Steyning Centre, Fletcher’s Croft, Steyning. BN44 3XZ. Information Colin Jilks: 01903 810395.
