Give table tennis a try, girls are told

-

Horsham Table Tennis Club is working with the sport’s governing body, Table Tennis England, to encourage and support more girls and young women in the community to give table tennis a go.

Whether girls come to the party with the ambition to be a high performer or the motivation is more about fun and being social and active the club is keen to positively engage more female players with the benefits of playing a true sport for life.

The club already runs a strong weekly programme but with the help of Sport England funding is now kickstarting two new sessions catering for girls aged 7-12 years, and those aged 13.

Both sessions are running at the club’s Greenway Academy home in Horsham on Thursday evenings with fulltime professional coach and Sri Lankan international player Amila Thilikarathne.

Girls’ table tennis is a strategic priority of the governing body and HTTC is keen to build on its strong tradition in developing female players. Nationally ranked players such as Sally Weston and Holly Holder stand as good examples but the attention is now turning towards cultivating a new generation.

As a largely indoor based sport table tennis was particularly affected by the pandemic but since returning to action HTTC’s re-building efforts have been well rewarded in its junior, adult social and competitive player ranks, supporting its motto ‘There’s a place for everyone in Horsham Table Tennis Club’.
