Clubs build towards bowls’ big weekend

Horsham Bowling Club have had three away games in a week.

The first was at St Francis but was disrupted by rain and so was abandoned.

The following day a team of 5 triples headed up to Ewhurst for a friendly. Losing only one rink, Horsham won 90-61, top rink was skipped by Kelly McCartney and aided by Alison HiltonChil­ds & Dave Packham to a 27-10 win.

A trip to the coast for a five-mixed rink encounter with East Preston & Kingston. This was quite a close game against good south coast players. Horsham won 2 rinks, but lost 3, with a final tally of 89-95. Top rink for Horsham went to Martin Jolliffe, Jules Packham, Irene Gettins and Dave Marden, scoring 25-16.

At home to Pippbrook, Dorking, rain kept intervenin­g, but they gamely completed 18 ends. Horsham lost 63-66. Top rink for Horsham, contained Barbara Meyer, Sally Gardner and skip Martin Gardner, with a score of 16-12.

On Saturday, May 28, Horsham Bowling Club on Pondtail Road will join other clubs nationwide in the Bowls Big Weekend. They will be opening their doors from 11am to anyone who wants to try a new sport, have fun and make new friends.

You will be shown their modern clubhouse where refreshmen­ts will be available then head outside to see their fantastic green where you will be invited to ‘have a go’. Or you may like to have a go at the Short Mat indoor version.

Members are always excited to welcome new bowlers to their friendly club, they boast one of the best bowling greens in the county, along with their well-fitted clubhouse, complete with changing facilities and bar. PULBOROUGH The heavens opened as Pulborough BC welcomed 24 Sussex County men and women to their green for a celebratio­n centenary match.

Fifteen ends of soggy bowls followed, with Pulborough staying in touch on all six rinks. Steve Adsett and team won 14-10, whilst Ivan Salmon’s rink scored three on the final end to steal their win.

Top rink for Pulborough went to skip Paul Leatherbar­row, Sylvia Smith as lead, Terry Chriss as 2 and Alfie Knight as 3, after taking the lead on the 4th end and finishing on +5 shots.

Sussex took the win by just four shots after a banter-filled, competitiv­e match that ended with food and drinks.

It was a memorable day for Pulborough Bowls Club and a great way to celebrate their special year.

Three triples from Cranleigh came to Pulborough for 18 ends of tough bowls with

Cranleigh taking the win on 2 of the 3 rinks and overall, by 55-49.

Top rink for Pulborough went to Steve Meadowcrof­t, with Sylvia Smith as lead and Mick Ralph as 2 by with impressive 22-16 score.

The first Mike Wood Memorial Cup has been played at Pulborough. six drawn triples played three sessions of seven ends in damp conditions.

Just three triples finished on a positive shot difference and the winner’s cup, presented by Ann Wood, went to Steve Adsett, Martyn Ralph and Jenny Patterson, after winning all three of their sessions.

Pulborough have begun

their league matches this week, with matches against Petworth and Crablands and friendlies with Fittlewort­h and Steyning at home. Spectators always welcome.

SOUTHWATER Southwater travelled to Goring Manor where they were well and truly beaten. However at home to Popes Mead they won 74-66.

Top rink was Annie Anderson, Martin Hargrave and Jenny Haysom (22-12) supported by Jenny Liddle, Sonia Gordon and Geoff Kentish (23-16) and Margot Barton, John Curlewis and John Coghlan (16-15).

The match away at Adastra was beset by rain and

abandoned with 12 ends played. Adastra were leading 53 to 43 with only Sue Lewis, Jean Meinertzha­gen and John Coghlan leading for Southwater.

STEYNING Steyning Bowls Club got off to a superb start with five wins in a row.

The first was at Marine Gardens BC in Worthing.

There was another triples match at St Francis BC in Haywards Heath which brought a 97-66 win for Steyning.

Paul Wiskin skipped the top rink and was successful again against Saltdean BC when the overall score was 79-77.

Next Steyning beat Portslade BC, again at home.

The third home match was against Storringto­n BC which ended with a, 85-78 win for Steyning. The top rink skip was Joan Ford with a score of 23-11.

Steyning are offering free taster sessions every Thursday evening during May. The sessions start at 6pm.

On Sunday May 29, as part of the Big Bowls Weekend, they will be open from midday to 5pm.
