Trophy semi-final lies ahead for Heath

-

Mannings Heath's handicap squad are through to the semi-finals of the Birchwood Trophy but needed all their battling qualities to come away from Mid Sussex with a fine 3-2 win.

Lorcan Conneely and John Badillo won 6&4 and Graham Lafferty and Gary Hayes finished one up but it was two halved matches that proved pivotal.

Ben Perry and Chris Whitter came back to level after being three down with seven to play and Kevin Dixon and Luke Highham did likewise after being three down with six left.

Peter Wilson and Alex Harman took their match to the 18th but lost one down in Heath's only reverse. The squad will meet Selsey on July 23 for a place in the final.

Back on the Waterfall, a competition based on the 'devil's number' – 666 – saw pairs playing six holes each of foursomes, better-ball and Texas Scramble for the Lucifer's Challenge Trophy. Paul Greenhead and David Budden provided the day's success story after combining for 44 points, one better than Karl Boffey and Aaron Barnes and two clear of Steve Dowell and Trevor Ruffell.

Seven players beat the Waterfall par in the seniors' matchplay competition but Paul Carter, playing off 22, finished three up to claim the Roy Sendall Cup. Carter was two ahead of the course at the turn and after nett birdies on the 13th and 14th even a double bogey on the last could not derail him. Colin Cloy, Nick Kimberley and Stewart Struthers followed him home on +2.

Heath's senior foursomes team went to Ifield in the Gilbert Print Plate but lost 4-0.

Lynne Jones won the ladies' David Burroughs Salver.
