Alex and Rosemary take Heath honours

Playing an opponent in matchplay who pars every hole is always going to be a challenge – and so it proved in Mannings Heath's Hill Challenge Cup with only two players able to beat the Waterfall course.

Alex Lodge, playing off five, was two down after a double bogey on the 10th but played the last seven holes beautifully in two under the card to finish one up and claim the trophy.

Martyn Little finished on the same mark but was just pipped on countback while Ed Barnes and Gary Ogden both finished all square.

Sunday morning rain put a dampener on Stableford entries but 21-handicap Stuart Gill could be pleased with his winning 38 points, three clear of Keith Marshall.

The seniors staged their first medal of the year and found scoring tough in a strong wind.

Nigel Billingham, off ten, parred the last five holes for a nett 72 and Derek Hendy and Andy Bone signed for 73 and 74.

The ladies too found conditions a struggle as they contested their Bob Collins Cup with 20-handicap Rosemary Martin beating Mina Burton by a solitary point, 29 to 28, thanks to a back nine that included three pars and a birdie.

The trophy bears the name of the former club president who donated it and his daughter Paige was on hand to present it.

The ladies also played their opening match in the Sussex Martlets league at home to Ifield.

Inspired by smart new kit sponsored by the Wates Group, Heath's team of Mary Grange, Meriel Jolley, Rosemary Martin, Mina Burton and Julia Hoskins produced an immaculate display to win 5-0.
