Greens are busy as season hits top gear

With a point to prove after losing to Bognor in the first round of the Brooks Motors League, Pulborough bowlers headed to Petworth’s artificial rink for the second round.

Both Pulborough teams made it over the line to win 43-38.

Top rink went to Skip Malcolm Gray, Lead Sylvia Smith and No2 Dave Cobbold by one shot.

A friendly at Henfield saw four triples play a split game. Malcolm Gray, LA Feldmanis and Jenny MT won 20-15, a fantastic comeback.

Jane Gray and team won 22-11, while Phil Floyd's team won 19-12, but top rink went to a modest Trevor Bushell, who credited his team of Jenny Patterson and Dave Soutar after a 30-7 scoreline.

Four rinks travelled to Arundel for the first round of the Knockout PC Products Cup.

Steve Adsett and team won 19-18 and joint top rinks went to Matt Ives, Ray Hall, Ivan Salmon, Dave Soutar and Malcolm Gray, Marc Pells, Jeff Elliott and Christian Bushell.

Pulborough progress to the next round after beating Arundel overall by 81-72.

Pulborough's third Open Day for the Bowls England Big Bowls Weekend is on Bank Holiday Monday from 2pm – everyone welcome.

HORSHAM

It has been another busy week for Horsham, with bowlers competing in both individual and inter-club County and National competitio­ns.

Ladies County 4s - Vanessa Mellor, Wendy Smith, Jules Packham and Debbie Jarvis played Maltravers away and won 19-14.

Men’s County 4s – Dave Packham, Richard Bourne, Ric Davey and Gerard Donck played at home against Billingshu­rst (B) winning 23-14.

National Over 60s Mixed Two Fours (Tony Allcock) – Two mixed teams of four played at home against Billingshu­rst A. Horsham lost 30-44.

Ladies County Triples – Barbara Meyer, Debbie Bown and Irene Gettins played at home to beat Hurstpierp­oint 17-12.

Ladies County Triples – Barbara Meyer, Debbie Brown and Irene Gettins played at home to beat Southwater 19-16.

Men’s County 4s - Dave Packham, Richard Bourne, Ric Davey and Gerard Donck played at home to Hollingsbu­ry and won 23-16.

Ladies County Unbadged (Trixie) Pairs – Vanessa and Mari Bourne played at home against Southwater, winning 24-7.

Ladies County Unbadged (Trixie) Pairs – Wendy Smith and Jules Packham played away at Hollingsbu­ry, losing 25-10.

Women’s County Top Club – A team comprising a four, triples, pair and a aingles played at Hurstpierp­oint. The ladies lost on three rinks and won on one, losing 6-2 overall.

Horsham played at home in the first leg of the Town Challenge against Horsham Park.

Horsham lost heavily on two rinks but kept their chances of reclaiming the cup, thanks to a large win on the third rink. It ended 51-51, so there is everything to play for in the return fixture.

Top rink was Wendy Smith, Dulce Pearson, Ray Ransom and Neil Jarvis.

BILLINGSHU­RST

In the first of two friendlies it was a case of “what if ” as Billingshu­rst Bowlers travelled to Ewhurst.

Billingshu­rst quickly took control. After only five ends they were some 16 shots ahead, things looking pretty good for the second win of the season.

The game swung slowly towards the home side, who finally ran out winners by 80-76.

This was followed by an away fixture at Southgate Park.

After five ends the away side were 12 shots ahead on a

damp and slow green. Billingshu­rst's lead had been back cut to only five by the break but the team of Linda Stevenson, Marion Clark and Ray Neal scored the maximum shot, pushing Billingshu­rst to a 77-58 win.

HORSHAM PARK BC

On Saturday (May 25), Horsham Park Bowls Club is opening its doors to the public. Everyone is invited to come and have a go at bowls.

Situated in the centre of Horsham Park, the Bowls Club is one of its best-kept secrets.

Members of the club will be on hand to help with basic techniques and a few simple rules. All you need to play the game will be provided.

The club also offer free taster sessions on Tuesdays 10am-12pm and Saturdays 11am-1pm. Turn up or phone 07305 078877.

SOUTHWATER

Southwater played Steyning and won 49-43 thanks to the winning rink of Martin Hargrave, Carol Rowell, Les Gordon and John Borasinski (25-7).

In the ladies’ Sussex top club competitio­n, Southwater won two of the four matches, but lost to Burgess Hill. Jean Meinertzha­gen won the singles; Jenny Haysom and Judioth Hitchman the pairs.

All three rinks won against Haywards Heath with an overall score of 58-39.

Best was Sonia Gordon, Terry Rowell, Mike Jones and Peter Curd (25-11), with Ian Cribb, Les Gordon, Kevin Lewis and Tim Gander (1814) and Mair Williams, John Coghlan, Cliff Merchant and Johhn Borasinski (15-14) backing up.

Away to Horsham Park a win was achieved by 65-52. Best triple was Kerry Geer, Mike Jones and Judith Hitchman (21-12) with Mair Williams, Jackie Merchant and John Boransinsk­i (17-8) and Debbie Coshan, Ian Cribb and Cliff Merchant (15-13) supporting.
