What the EU means to us

- SUE GODFREY Arundel

Suppose, just suppose that the desire to remain in an alliance with our closest neighbours is to do with more than economics and trade.

Suppose it is because we appreciate that so many of our European friends help us to run our beloved NHS, care for our elderly loved ones and grow our food, as well as paying taxes to our Exchequer.

Suppose it is because we are thankful that we have lived and worked together in peace for over 70 years. Suppose we cherish the opportunity to live, study, work and love in 27 other countries, and use our mobile phones with no extra charge.

Suppose it has something to do with our beaches and air being cleaner, our food, medicines and air travel being safer. Suppose it is because we support the European Union’s defence of the rule of law and human rights.

Suppose we are proud of our common European cultural heritage and understand that for centuries many of our ancestors came from Europe to build a better life, making our country the successful and vibrant nation it is today.

Suppose we value the security of being part of a strong union of nations, giving us a significant role in an uncertain world. Suppose its because many UK regions are supported by European funding, as are our universities and research centres.

Suppose we feel that employment rights should be protected so workers are not exploited. Suppose we believe ourselves to be European.

And if economics and trade ARE important - suppose we believe we already have the best possible trade agreement with the European Union.
