READERS’ CHARTER

- JOHN BOXALL Clapham MARTIN BIGNELL Exmoor Crescent, Worthing

transport.

That is exactly what John Prescott said when Labour came into power in 1997. A few weeks later he, the then Minister for Transport, scrapped the Worthing by pass in favour of public transport.

The question they should both ask is, where is John Prescott now and more importantly where is his ‘public transport’ vision today? Neither to be seen since and never will.

Public transport is unable to reach areas that can easily be reached by car. It is often unreliable and expensive and is proven by the number of the cars we see on the roads today. People feel safer and more comfortable travelling by car, therefore I cannot see that the ‘day of the car ownership will soon be over’ as no more than utter nonsense.

The A27 is not unique, road improvements are needed nationally. Road infrastructure has blighted this country for years, purely through lack of investment, as we saw the demise of our railway system in the 70s and 80s.

The sooner we have a Worthing, Arundel and Chichester bypass the better it will be for all of us!

So, now I see all of the Covid cycle lanes are being removed. Well that was money well spent, wasn’t it? The scheme must have saved thousands of lives. Now we can all relax safe in the knowledge that all the materials that were used in the construction of the posts was totally biodegradable.

And of course that the carbon footprint produced in the energy expended in the installation and removal will be offset by the amount of use that it received. Let us not worry or complain that thousands of people are losing their livelihood and that the economy is being destroyed. Don’t ever forget, we are Brtish.
