Goodie bags are a boost to lonely people

-

Residents facing Christmas alone or who missed out on community Christmas dinner events because of coronavirus restrictions received special goodie bags thanks to kindhearted volunteers.

The scheme, run for individuals in Arundel, was so successful it will continue throughout January.

It saw gift bags, featuring handmade cards and items donated by Larkins store in Tarrant Street and the Post Office.

Theinitiativewasorganised by Arundel Community Aid, Mark Phillips, Gemma Odde and the St Nicholas Support Hub, assisted by volunteers who gave up their time to help. Many of the volunteers said they enjoyed lovely, socially distanced chats with the recipients and smiles came across people’s faces as they investigated the bag.

For some, the dropping off of the bags and having a friendly chat was the highlight of that person’s Christmas, when many would be totally alone. Phonecallswerealsoorganised forthosewhorequestedthem.

Mr Phillips said: “Thanks once again to the Arundel Community for being so kind and caring – another example of their reputation for pulling together when help is need. The project is only a success because of the community spirit and the team effort.”
