READERS’ CHARTER

- C.PERCEVAL Tower House Gardens, Arundel JOHN NEWMAN Maplehurst Road, Chichester

the lower Arun valley is vital as it is the last green lung on the West Sussex coastal plain.

Objections to this damaging scheme have to be submitted before January 28 via website www.arun.gov.uk/weeklylists clicking comment tab.

Alternatively, write to Mr Eastham, Planning Dept, Arun District Council, BN17 5LF to object.

I hope that I was not the only reader to be appalled this week that there could be even a possibility of children and family centres being under threat.

It is clear such a service is desperately needed, and I trust that councillors who really care about services for people in need and seek to promote West Sussex as a civilised and caring society will not entertain such a cruel idea.

I realise West Sussex County Council finds itself short of resources in great measure because of the way that the Government has denuded local councils of resources for some years now, but, even while making that excuse for them, it might be a possibility that at least some members of the ruling group on West Sussex County

Council may have voted for the Government that has perpetrated this outrage.

Sadly this seems not to be an isolated example locally or nationally of those in need not being properly helped.

I think of examples such as this week’s revelations about meals for children in need, the failure to provide laptops for deprived children so that they can learn at home during lockdown, and the failure thus far to promise to extend the additional £29 per week to those on Universal Credit.

Do we live in a civilised and caring society, locally and nationally, or don’t we?
