Record street party attempt idea
A world-record-breaking attempt at the longest street party is being considered for Bognor Regis to mark the Queen’s platinum jubilee.
A seafront street party is part of a weekend of events being put forward to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II on February 6, 1952.
An extra bank holiday has been created next year and the traditional May bank holiday weekend moved to create a four-day Jubilee weekend from June 2 to 5.
Addressing the town council events, promotions and leisure committee, event organiser Sarah Boote-Cook said the town’s annual carnival was on June 4 and the idea was to have a street party on another day.
They were considering a Guinness World Records attempt at the longest street party to beat 1.5 miles.
“Aldwick to Elmer on the seafront is three miles,” she said, asking councillors if this was an event they would collaborate on.
“We can go as big or little as we like with live music, entertainers and all sorts of things. This could put Bognor on the map.”
The biggest tombola or the biggest Victoria sponge are other options to make it a ‘really British day’.
Councillors agreed it was a great idea, with Jim Brooks sayingit‘fittedideally’withthe Regis in the town’s name.
The town council is looking to hold an afternoon event on June 2 in the area of the prom and Place St Maur, possibly to include lighting the beacon, and is looking at collaborating on and supporting other events through the weekend.
Councillors agreed to put forward a budget of £5,000 to be agreed by the policy and resources committee.
