See poet Luke Wright – aka the Ballad Seller – as stage tour returns
uke Wright is bringing his new show The Ballad Seller to Brighton Komedia on Sunday, October 10 as part of an extensive UK tour.
Multi award-winner
Luke has been a professional poet for over 20 years, is now internationally renowned and usually spends his year touring the world. Of course, that has been curtailed by the pandemic, but now he is returning to the stage
In fact, he is cementing his reputation as the hardest working man in poetry, taking no less than three shows on tour in the coming months, making guest appearances on many of John Cooper Clarke’s tour dates and has already had two books published this year.
In Brighton he will be performing his new show The Ballad Seller. Based on his recently published book of the same name, it takes the style of Georgian street ballads (which were most
LBriton’s prime news source for many centuries) and updates them for the modern ear and ups the quality control considerably!
The book features illustrations from The Guardian’s Martin Rowson. Before newspapers, before radio and TV and the internet most news in the UK was delivered as street ballads. Sellers would hawk their doggerel on street corners for a penny a sheet. Predating modern tabloids and sensationalist websites, these single-sheet broadsides would tell of scandalous affairs, grisly crimes, and colourful characters, bringing them to life in rhyming verse.
Luke is a brilliantly witty and erudite interviewee.
He is now internationally renowned and established as one of Britain’s top stand-up
