Garton shows others the way ahead

Susssex cricket chiefs say George Garton’s journey from Sussex rookie to England hopeful can inspire others to take the same path to glory. ggg

Garton, 24, has signed a new multi-year contract extension with the county days afer being their star man in their Vitality Blast semifinal defeat to Kent.

He is ahomegrown talent who came through the club’s pathway system, and in recent months, he has received his first full England call-up, won The Hundred with Southern Brave, secured a deal in the Indian Premier League and helped Sussex to Blast Finals Day, where he took 2-24 and top-scored for the Sharks with 41 in the semi-final.

Sussex T20 Head Coach, James Kirtley said: “It’s great to have George with is for the foreseeabl­e future. He is one of several players we see as pillars of our side in the years to come. He adds great balance to any side and is one of the best fielders in the world.

“By nurturing George as a person we’ve got the best out of him as a cricketer. It’s great to see a player who has come through the Sussex system performing on some of the biggest stages in the world.

“I look forward to working with him in the future and supporting him to help him achieve all his goals and fulfil his undoubted potential.”

Championsh­ip and oneday coach Ian Salisbury said: “We’re very pleased George has committed his future to Sussex for the seasons to come.

“He’s a hugely exciting cricketer that contribute­s with bat and ball and in the field across all formats. Players like that are huge assets who are in high demand . Garton said: “I’m delighted to have extended my contract with my boyhood club and am very excited for what the next few years will bring.”
