Event marks club’s special occasion

-

As part of its anniversary celebrations, Worthing Hockey Club hosted its first Veteran Masters Tournament at The Angmering School.

The club was delighted to welcome teams from England, Scotland and Northern Ireland for some very close, competitive and high level hockey across the two days.

Featuring a host of Home Nations Masters internationals and a former Great Britain Olympic star, the men’s tournament was decided in the last few minutes of the last game.

With a late 3-2 win, Worthing Mens Over-45s just edged out a strong Scotland Masters team.

Meanwhile in the ladies competition, Girls on Fire, from North Downs HC in Northern Ireland, took the honours with Worthing finishing as runners-up.

The tournament featured men’s over-45 Teams and ladies over-35 teams and was played in a round robin league format, with medals and trophies for the winners and runners-up.

The weekend was supported by a barbecue on the Friday, a Saturday night formal dinner and a Sunday Hog Roast.

The Veteran Masters tournament was the latest in a series of planned 125th year anniversary events for the 2021-22 season, which kicked off on July 31 with a gala dinner in the club’s new grand marquee.

The new events venue, attached to the main clubhouse, saw over 110 guests gather for the club’s first get together in nearly two years.

The club was honoured to host a number of life vicepresidents, current viceresidents and former players present, as well as current members and their families, at the three course dinner and dance.

The keynote speech was delivered by England over-70s and 75s Master international Robin Carr, a former club president and the longestserving playing member with over 52 seasons in the bag.
