Independent body needed

-

Your recent expose of our local government remunerations, makes for interesting nay shocking reading.

The hackneyed justification that to get the best, we have to pay the top remuneration is always trotted out, but this excuse is very often not borne out in many professions including local government.

Take just one example, that of professional footballers/ managers where obscene transfer fees and salaries have by no means ‘guaranteed’ exceptional performance, and many are just additions to already burgeoning overheads, primarily to feather the individuals own nests – and who picks up the tab – the paying supporters.

It seems no different with local government, which is free to set whatever remuneration it deems fit (and can get away with) and leave it to the taxpayers to pick up the tab – and for what? Endless and arguably unnecessary building development with little or no supporting infrastructure, road conditions which are frankly disgusting and the depletion/loss of many vital public services, the list is almost endless.

It is long overdue that appropriate corrective actions are put in place to address the local government runaway gravy train.

An independent review body with real teeth to fully assess and regulate the bodies, based on their overall performance and customer satisfaction, otherwise we will all continue to suffer. MR K. JONES Worcester Road, Chichester
