Chestnut Tree House

Our first 18+ social event

- By Anna Jones, director of children services

For the children and families we care for at Chestnut Tree House, there is nothing more important than having fun, making special memories together and sometimes, doing something they never thought they could! It’s been an action packed month at Chestnut Tree House, from social events, to a visit from the circus, and all of this is only possible thanks to the support of people like you.

With the weather getting warmer, outdoor adventures are in full swing! Our woodland walk is accessible for children and young people in wheelchairs and beds, and during the Easter holidays our activities team held a party among the trees, have been busy building dens, and organising treasure hunts. The children have also been enjoying lots of sensory time out on the mats in the garden, and we even had a special visit from the circus, which everyone loved.

But not all of our care and activities take place at Chestnut Tree House, a lot of our care takes place in the community and in families’ homes. We recently held our first 18+ social and it was a roaring success! We had four young men attend, some of them trying cocktails for the very first time. There was lots of chatting and laughing and the boys all said they would like to do more and had lots of ideas for what we could do next. Our 18+ social is a chance for teenagers who want some time away from their families and a rare chance to hang out and laugh with friends.

Our siblings also recently visited Seal Bay, where they had a chance to meet some animals at the petting zoo. Growing up with a brother or sister who has a lifelimiting or life-threatening condition isn’t always easy. Our sibling events give children the chance to meet others facing the same challenges, make new friends, and express themselves in a safe environment.

When it comes to Chestnut Tree House, no two days are the same. We don’t like to say ‘no’ and try to make everything possible for the children and young people we care for. But our care is only possible thanks to your support. So, on behalf of all the children and families – thank you.
