Children’s flag designs to help mark the Coronation
Chichester city centre has been adorned with special Coronation flags designed by local schoolchildren.
Following a competition involving children from St Richard’s School, Cawley Road, and The Prebendal School, West Street, the winning designs were selected and then installed by Chichester BID.
They will be on display for King Charles III’s Coronation on May 6 and will stay in place until mid-June. Helen Marshall, chair and CEO of Chichester BID, said: “We are so impressed with the creativity and talent of the designs we received. It was incredibly hard to choose the winners.
"The King’s Coronation is an important piece of history and we wanted young people to be at the heart of the celebrations.
"We hope the children and their families will feel incredibly proud when they see their flags flying along the main streets of the city.”
A total of eight flag designs were chosen with winners aged from six to 10.
The flags will be on display alongside Union flags and colourful bunting to help add to the celebratory atmosphere in the city.
On the Coronation day itself, Chichester BID and Chichester Cathedral will be hosting a special outdoor screening of the ceremony and parade on the Cathedral Green.
The Green will be filled with comfortable deck chairs, courtesy of Chichester District Council, for people to soak up the festive atmosphere.
There will also be Coronation themed arts, crafts, games and face painting to keep families entertained.
Chichester BID is a business led initiative supported by government legislation which gives businesses the power “to raise funds locally to be spent locally” on improving a defined commercial area.
Helen Marshall added: “We encourage people to pack a picnic rug and their favourite treats or explore the many eateries in the city centre to grab a delicious lunch. "Our city centre businesses are looking forward to celebrating this royal occasion with as many people as possible.”The Coronation event will take place on Saturday, May 6, from 10am until 3pm, the ceremony is due to take place at 11am.
