The King’s role in the Commonwealth

-

As we celebrate His Majesty King Charles III’s coronation and the world’s eyes fall on our country, we should take a moment to consider the Monarch’s role at the centre of the Commonwealth.

A voluntary association of 56 countries and 2.2 billion citizens, the Commonwealth brings together like-minded nations from every corner of the globe to work towards shared goals of prosperity, democracy and peace.

Together, the Commonwealth has achieved success in championing the environment and supporting democracy across the continents. It has developed societies, supported small states in tackling challenges and has boosted trade relations across its membership and beyond.

With His Majesty as the Head of the Commonwealth, he is personally able to reinforce the links by which the Commonwealth joins people together from around the world in this important unifying role.

His Majesty’s passion to deliver good as Head of the Commonwealth was evident in his Commonwealth Day Message which said: “This extraordinary potential, which we hold in common, is more than equal to the challenges we face.

"It offers us unparalleled strength not merely to face the future, but to build it.

"Here, the Commonwealth has an incredible opportunity, and responsibility, to create a genuinely durable future – one that offers the kind of prosperity that is in harmony with Nature and that will also secure our unique and only planet for generations to come.”

In September last year, I was proud to swear allegiance to His Majesty and it was a pleasure to meet him in Parliament last week on behalf of all constituents.

As we reflect on the extraordinary life of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth

II’s life and the progression of our society throughout her 70 year reign, it should be with excitement that we look ahead to this New Carolean Era and everything that our communities will achieve together.
