We give talks to schools

-

Children’s hospices such as Chestnut Tree House are full of light and joy. If you walk through the House on any day of the week you are likely to hear whoops of delight, peals of laughter and the sounds of children at play.

The children and young people we care for may have life-limiting conditions, but they are still children. They still want what all children want, which is to be loved and to experience the world through play. I am always humbled by the strength and resilience of our hospice families, and it is a privilege to help them make magical memories together. I want to shine a light on one of our amazing supporters this week. Recently, nine-year-old Blake set himself a challenge to run 5k – further than he had ever done before – for Chestnut Tree House. He hoped to raise £250, but far exceeded his target and sent a cheque for £1,750! Blake heard about Chestnut Tree House at an assembly at his school. Our community fundraisers are experienced at delivering age-appropriate presentations to children in all age groups. They will tell them about what we do, the services we provide and how the children can help with specific campaigns such as Teddy Bears’ Picnics or Reindeer Fun. The questions that arise can vary widely. Primary ages often ask about the fun activities and whether they can come and stay, but the older children will ask how many children we look after and how much it costs to run the hospice. For some – like Blake – hearing that some children need a little more support can prompt a desire to do something. If you would like to enquire about an assembly at your school, please contact us through the website www.chestnut.org.uk
