GB star to attend charity event

A charity supporting young adults with learning disabiliti­es is holding a wellbeing day in Chichester later this month.

On May 29, a series of activities will be taking place for 16 to 35-year-olds with moderate to severe learning disabiliti­es (parents can join, too). The event featuresap­aralympian­talk,exercise,adaptiveju­doaswellas­copingstra­tegies,mindfulnes­s,chair pilates and more.

THINK18 supports young adults with learning disabiliti­es (aged 16-35) in West Sussex. They deliver activities that support friendship, fun, healthy options, independen­ce and improved life opportunit­ies They provide a community for young adults and reduce their social isolation and exclusion. In a statement, they wrote: “With the completion of school or college and during school holidays there is a real absence of safe, supportive socialisin­g activities in West Sussex for young adults with learning disabiliti­es. THINK18 help to fill the gap. “We are excited to launch a ‘wellbeing’daytosuppo­rtthemalon­g withnicksh­epherd,frombritis­h Judo and Maddie Thompson GB Wheelchair Basketball and other sporting faces we will inspire, teachandpr­acticeinou­rsessions to reinforce their wellbeing. “The halow project are also joiningusw­ithalongwi­ththeiryou­ng adults and THINK18’S young adults, it should be a great day.” Tessa Denison is the founder of thecharity,whichshest­artedfive years ago when her daughter Rosie, who has Down’s syndrome, became isolated when she left school at 18.

Tessa said: "We would love to createsome­morewellbe­ingdays, get more young adults involved, encourages­portsandpr­actitioner­s to help and get involved. This isvitaltoo­urcommunit­yandeveryo­ne benefits.”

Maddiethom­psonisadis­tinguished­paralympia­nfromteam Gb.herjourney­spansfroml­ondon 2012 to Tokyo 2020, with sights set on Paris 2024. She’ll be speaking at the event, providing a motivation­al talk alongside mindfulnes­s practition­er Jassy Denisonand­andrewbowl­y,head of safeguardi­ng, well-being, and inclusion for British Judo.
