GB star to attend charity event
A charity supporting young adults with learning disabilities is holding a wellbeing day in Chichester later this month.
On May 29, a series of activities will be taking place for 16 to 35-year-olds with moderate to severe learning disabilities (parents can join, too). The event featuresaparalympiantalk,exercise,adaptivejudoaswellascopingstrategies,mindfulness,chair pilates and more.
THINK18 supports young adults with learning disabilities (aged 16-35) in West Sussex. They deliver activities that support friendship, fun, healthy options, independence and improved life opportunities They provide a community for young adults and reduce their social isolation and exclusion. In a statement, they wrote: “With the completion of school or college and during school holidays there is a real absence of safe, supportive socialising activities in West Sussex for young adults with learning disabilities. THINK18 help to fill the gap. “We are excited to launch a ‘wellbeing’daytosupportthemalong withnickshepherd,frombritish Judo and Maddie Thompson GB Wheelchair Basketball and other sporting faces we will inspire, teachandpracticeinoursessions to reinforce their wellbeing. “The halow project are also joininguswithalongwiththeiryoung adults and THINK18’S young adults, it should be a great day.” Tessa Denison is the founder of thecharity,whichshestartedfive years ago when her daughter Rosie, who has Down’s syndrome, became isolated when she left school at 18.
Tessa said: "We would love to createsomemorewellbeingdays, get more young adults involved, encouragesportsandpractitioners to help and get involved. This isvitaltoourcommunityandeveryone benefits.”
Maddiethompsonisadistinguishedparalympianfromteam Gb.herjourneyspansfromlondon 2012 to Tokyo 2020, with sights set on Paris 2024. She’ll be speaking at the event, providing a motivational talk alongside mindfulness practitioner Jassy Denisonandandrewbowly,head of safeguarding, well-being, and inclusion for British Judo.
