I did not know my father,
I should have known
I did not know the part he played, The future he fought for
I should have known.
He came back, wounded sapper in trench and underground
He was cited for a medal, he never got.
I did not know.
A young man at 18, an old man at 21.
Wipers (Ypres) he saw, not as I have seen but razed to the ground.
No mis-spent youth, just spent youth!
He fought for King and country and for me
