Sex offender’s street name may be changed

-

MOVES are being made to change the name of a street that was called after a former head of the Queen’s bank who was exposed as a prolific sex offender.

Former Naval officer and Coutts boss, Charles Howeson, 69, was convicted last year of historic sex offences. He was sent to prison for sevenand-a-half years after being found guilty of 10 indecent assaults against eight young men in the 1980s and ’90s.

Plymouth City Council chiefs have now set in motion plans to change the name of Howeson Lane in his home city of Plymouth, Devon.

They said Howeson Lane “was officially named in 2004 after Charles Howeson, who owned the land it is on”.

The street is home to a number of businesses, including a Travelodge, a Mercedes Benz garage and the Jack Rabbit restaurant. It is also bordered by some student flats.

A member of the public made a complaint about the name and the council said it would seek the views of residents and nearby businesses.

A letter sent to the member of the public noted that the council was now “proceeding with the statutory process for the renaming.”
